On Tuesday 29th November, BBC2 dedicated an entire hour to taking a look at the business of wealth creation. Maybe you saw the programme – Money: Who Wants to be a Millionaire? In my opinion it was a mixed bag - a mixture of thoughtful insights, light-hearted commentary and lack of analysis. London’s residential market is outperforming the rest of the UK, with average rents increasing by almost 7% in the 12 month period between October 2010 and October 2011. The average rent in Greater London is reported to have broken through the £1,000 per month barrier for the first time, now reaching £1,006 per month; and with Central London and prime postcode rents surging to an average of £2,500 per month.

In this era of static property prices with great doubt over future price growth the traditional view of buying and holding property because it will "double in price every eight years" is a questionable strategy. You would be pinning your hopes on an uncertain future.
